Juhannusterveisin / Midsummer Greetings

Löyly Helsinki (by me)

Birgitta Hernesaari (by me)
Greetings from Helsinki! This summer I am spending Midsummer in the city while my husband is on a road trip in Europe. I have spent the holiday mostly resting, reading and contemplating flamenco travel. My thesis on the motivational factors of flamenco travel is weaving its web in my head and I have also been creating some other interesting ideas regarding the topic. Maybe we will get back to that later on... I started Midsummer with a friend at the new and stylish Löyly sauna complex in Helsinki and having an evening snack at the charming Birgitta Hernesaari café nearby. I am sure the elegant and trendy Löyly establishment will gain much interest from young city-dwellers and from foreigners. What a pity, however, that accessibility had been completely overlooked while designing it.

The beginning of summer has continued to be extremely busy. Before midsummer I took part in two summer flamenco courses, the first por beautiful, summery alegrias with bata de cola and the other improvising to the fiery and challenging bulerias! Thank you again to the teacher and the musicians and wonderful companions! Olé!

Summer holidays are thankfully not that far in the future anymore and will be spent in Berlin, at the cottage, in Tampere and in Madrid. As stated before, we will visit Berlin for the first time this summer and I am really waiting for that! After Berlin, we will spend some quiet time relaxing, swimming and perhaps doing some summery cooking at the cottage. I hope the weather will be in our favor!

Our flamenco group will head to Tampere for the Tampere Flamenco Week and perform at the tradiotional open stage -performance at the latter show. We will have the honor of ending the whole night! It will be really great to get to perform our breathtaking (both the choreography and physical aspect) solea por bulerias por tangos choreography again with these lovely people!

For me, the highlight of the summer holiday is of course our trip to beloved Madrid where I will take part in Veranos Flamencos at the legendary Amor de Dios flamenco academy, a program lead by María Juncal and Alfonso Losa. What a fantastic and horrifying opportunity! How will I manage? In Madrid we will of course also enjoy the lovely city and perhaps even embark on some day trips, as well! May the holidays begin!
